The head of the California Environmental Protection Agency will be the keynote speaker at REXPO 8 Unplugged, an event that spotlights recycling and sustainability efforts in California. It will be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Hilton Stockton.
The "unplugged" theme represents two concepts: (a) that energy efficiency starts by unplugging power-sucking appliances and other devices when they are not in use; and (b) the perceived contradiction in priorities that leaves many people feeling unplugged when California has an opportunity to reinvigorate its economy through green businesses. Did you know that less than 20% of recyclable material collected in California remains in the state for remanufacturing? The majority is shipped to other parts of the United States or to global markets - sending jobs, tax revenue and commerce with it.
Recycling material into new products is one way to reduce emissions under California's landmark sustainability law, AB 32. That creates opportunity for California businesses. Instead, according to some estimates, eight of every 10 pieces of recyclable material placed on the curb is shipped to China for remanufacturing.
REXPO 8 Unplugged will showcase more than 65 exhibitors demonstrating that their products, services and innovations are drivers for economic prosperity in California. The Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce and other sponsors host the event.
EPA Secretary Matt Rodriguez is the luncheon speaker (tickets are $30), but mornings sessions include a speech by Assembly member Kristen Olsen (R-Modesto) and two panels on recycling, energy and air pollution. Here is a link to the agenda.
